Eur-Oceans: What can it do for you?
Publication Abstract

What EUR-OCEANS can do for YOU

The EUR-OCEANS Network aims to create a lasting integration for European research on global change and pelagic ecosystems. It brings together research communities working on pelagic ecosystems, biogeochemistry and ecosystem approach to marine resources. This integration is realised through Funding, Training, Database web portals and Communication and Outreach products.

Funding Opportunities

Workshops and meetings – 200,000 € will be awarded in 2007-08 to organise workshops relevant to EUR-OCEANS scientific & networking objectives. 500,000 € will be distributed among member institutions for participation to EUR-OCEANS workshops and meetings in 2007-08. These funds can also support participation to external events and meetings provided they are endorsed by EUR-OCEANS. Calls for proposals (both requests for endorsement and requests for support to organisation) close on 31 March and 2 October 2007. Contact the relevant WP/System Leader for more information.

Integration Projects – 150,000 € will be awarded in 2007-08 for small groups of EUR-OCEANS scientists to run projects fostering integration, with relevance to EUR-OCEANS scientific objectives (e.g. write review/synthesis papers). A first call for proposals will be open in early 2007 and advertised on the website.

Data Rescueand Transformation – 200,000 € will be awarded in 2007-08 to rescue historical field data and to transform already-rescued datasets into pre-determined formats. These data are required to constrain and evaluate models addressing pelagic ecosystems, biogeochemical fluxes and interactions with exploited marine resources. Call for proposals in February 2007.

Mobility – 100,000 € will be awarded in 2007-08 to fund mini sabbaticals, short visits and technical exchanges among EUR-OCEANS member institutions. Call opens June 2007 until 14 September 2007.

  • Technical exchanges are one-week events for technicians to acquire knowledge and experience on non-standard equipment or protocols. Training must take place in EUR-OCEANS member institutions and funding is offered to cover travel and living expenses of participants (500 Euros/week).
  • Mini sabbaticals are one- to two-month sabbaticals for PIs and associated scientists to visit EUR-OCEANS members institutions to deliver specific synthesis products (e.g. review papers, synthesis papers, book chapters) addressing EUR-OCEANS scientific objectives. Funding is offered to cover travel and living expenses of participants (1400 Euros/month).
  •  Short visits are one- to two-week exchanges of PIs, associated scientists, post-doc fellows and Ph.D. students (except those already funded by EUR-OCEANS) to exchange know-how, plan relevant EUR-OCEANS initiatives and activities, and collaborate in research experiments or synthesis exercises relevant to EUR-OCEANS scientific objectives. Funding is offered to cover travel and living expenses of participants (500 Euros/week).

Jobs & Training Opportunities

Post Docs – Four to five 18-months postdoctoral positions will be fully funded to address EUR-OCEANS scientific objectives, notably modelling the Global Ocean and Earth System, with emphasis on projects seeking synthesis and integration. Postdoctoral fellows must be co-supervised by PIs from at least two different EUR-OCEANS institutions, preferably from different countries. Deadline for application is 1 March 2007. Positions to begin no later than 1 July 2007.

Summer Schools – One- or two-week events gathering young researchers (students and early career scientists) around key topics connected to the EUR-OCEANS scientific objectives. They comprise theoretical lectures, practical exercises and/or laboratory and field work. Funds are awarded to institutions organising the event and cover all costs of student’s attendance. Proposals to organise a Summer School in 2008 should be submitted by September 1, 2007

Floating Universities – Provide an opportunity for young researchers (students and early career scientists) to participate in field work on various research vessels offering spare berths. Funding is offered to cover travel and living expenses of participants from EUR-OCEANS member institutions. Berth offers are accepted all year round and updated on the website. Apply any time.

Database web portals

Shared Facilities – You wish to use specialised equipment and wonder who to contact? EUR-OCEANS Shared Facilities Portal offers you to browse through 100+ facilities, including mesocosms, seagoing gear, culture facilities and analytical equipment.

Field data – You need data to constrain or evaluate a model, or to prepare a review paper? EUR-OCEANS Data Portal offers a network of databases with advanced search tools to download data on plankton, biogeochemical fluxes, and exploited marine resources.

Model Equations and Model Descriptions - The Model Shopping Tool (MoST) contains datasheets on ecosystem models and databases on computed vital rates and model equations including parameter values and references.

Model outputs – You want to study changes in marine ecosystem and ocean carbon cycle over the industrial period or the near future? The EUR-OCEANS model output database provides you with results from the most comprehensive coupled climate-ocean ecosystem models.

Communication and Outreach Products

Knowledge Transfer – You wish to communicate your science to target groups and promote its use in the wider management, policy and user communities? Several products are proposed by EUR-OCEANS, including a web-based Knowledge Transfer Unit and the publication of Fact Sheets.

The EUR-OCEANS Public Outreach Network offers technical and financial support for short films, press conferences and web-conferences to promote scientific issues relevant to EUR-OCEANS. The Network comprises 10 European aquaria and the European Union of Aquarium Curators.

News – The latest News and Events from the network are announced on the homepage of the website, as well as disseminated via a quarterly Newsletter. Online ‘Research Highlights’ of the latest pelagic ecosystem science to come soon!
