A rosy barb Pethia conchonius (Hamilton, 1822) in a London pond underscores the need to prevent aquarium releases
- Publication Abstract
-
A wild-caught specimen of rosy barb Pethis conchonius (Hamilton, 1822), an ornamental fish native to southern Asia, was encountered in an urbwn pond in London, UK: a suspected male of 51 mm standard length. The results of an invasiveness risk screening undertaken for Great Britain indicated that the species is currently unlikely to become established or disperse without human intervention, but highlighted the increased risk of subtropical species introductions leading to establishment under predicted climate change scenarios. This occurrence once again demonstrates the potential impacts of releases into urban ponds.
