The presence of small hornwrack Chartella papyracea (Ellis & Solander, 1786) (Order Cheilostomatida: Family Flustridae) at Walberswick, and an updated inventory of the marine bryozoans of East Anglia
- Publication Abstract
-
On 22 August 2025, whilst sampling the shallow sublittoral fish associated with the seaward side of the harbour wall at Walberswick (ca. 52.3138°N, 1.6730°E) with a hand net (see Ellis, 2023), a colony of C. papyracea was collected. The straw-coloured colony was abput 3 cm high and 4.5 cm across. Microscopic examination indicated that the fronds were bilaminar, avicularia were absent, the rectangular autozooids generally had relatively straight margins (and not constricted as per S. securifrons) and several (but not all) of the autozooids had a pair of short, distal spines. This combination of morphological characteristics is indicative of C. papyracea.
