Publication Abstract

Title
Visual Summary: Building capacity to decrease illegal trade of sharks and rays in Indonesia (2018-2023)
Publication Abstract

Indonesia is the world’s third largest trader in shark and ray (elasmobranch) products (e.g. fins). Elasmobranch products are often difficult to identify to species level making it challenging to detect protected species being illegally traded. This project worked to improve the capacity of trade regulators and law enforcement to detect illegally traded species through the development of a national training team and improved customs procedures using both visual and molecular approaches to species identification. Ultimately the project aimed to improve the traceability and sustainability of elasmobranch trade in Indonesia.
