A common problem for salmonid aquaculture causing significant economic loss.
Fish showing PKD signs every year which farmer considered to be getting progressively worse. In infected fish the kidney was swollen to occupy 2/3 of the body space. Fish die when handled.
Macroscopically the kidney had grey/green colour, with swollen, banded sections straining against the capsule. Spleens also hypertrophied with whitened areas. Histology showed marked PKD in kidney and spleen. Dilated collecting tubules were occasionally seen.
