This appears to be the first recorded case of an androgenised female cod. The significance of this finding is uncertain until additional material can be examined from cod obtained from other areas.
Follicles containing primary oocytes were interspersed with large areas of cells resembling spermatogonia. These cells were characterised by the presence of a central nucleolus, were contained in discrete follicles and appeared identical to the gonadal structure ordinarily seen in cod testis. Maturing spermatocytes are also present. These cells contained a dense nucleus and often existed in small cysts.
