Sophie Armitage

Data Analyst

Sophie is currently a Data Analyst at Cefas within the Epidemiology and Risk Modelling team. Her initial projects include modelling disease outbreaks, assessing the risk of listed diseases under climate change scenarios, as well as monitoring and analysing non-native species.

Sophie developed an interest in marine ecology and conservation whilst obtaining her BSc in Zoology at the University of Exeter. As part of her degree, she undertook a placement year with the Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML), working as a research technician within the Earth Observation and Remote Sensing department. Within this role, she completed a machine learning project, which aimed to create an automated approach to monitoring floating marine macroplastics. She continued working with PML through her dissertation project, where she investigated the relationship between Antarctic seal habitat preferences and satellite-derived environmental properties. Throughout these two projects, she developed her skills in machine learning, QGIS, statistical analysis and modelling, Python, and R. Throughout her career she has also developed field working skills, conducting benthic surveys for both the University of Plymouth and PML.
