Scottish and Northern Irish Partners make Premiam a truly UK wide initiative!

12 April 2011

The Premiam (Pollution Response in Emergencies - Marine Impact Assessment and Monitoring) project steering committee has great pleasure in welcoming key government stakeholder organisations from Scotland and Northern Ireland as full Premiam partners.

Premiam aims to improve post-spill monitoring in the marine environment through the production of guidelines and the formation and co-ordination of a network of response suppliers. It also aims to act as a focus point for the improvement of oil and chemical spill monitoring response and for the sharing and development of best practice.

A core strength of the Premiam approach is the cross-government integration and commitment to the project and their active input and support as Premiam partners. As such the extension of the core group of partners to include key stakeholders from Scotland and Northern Ireland, joining those from England and Wales (and those with a UK wide remit), provides greater strength to the project and makes the it truly a full UK wide initiative.

The new partners are:

  • MS (Marine Scotland)
  • SEPA (Scottish Environment Protection Agency)
  • SNH (Scottish National Heritage)
  • NIEA (Northern Ireland Environment Agency - part of Department of Environment, NI)
  • AFBI (Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute - Northern Ireland)
  • DARD (Department of Agriculture and Rural Development - Northern Ireland)

They join the existing group of partners which are:

  • Cefas (Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science) - Chair and co-ordinator
  • Defra (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs)
  • MCA (Maritime and Coastguard Agency)
  • MMO (Marine Management Organisation)
  • EA (Environment Agency)
  • FSA (Food Standards Agency)
  • NE (Natural England)
  • CCW (Countryside Council for Wales)
  • JNCC (Joint Nature Conservation Committee)
  • LGA (Local Government Association)
  • HPA (Health Protection Agency)
  • WAG (Welsh Assembly Government)
  • DECC (Department of Energy and Climate Change)

This expansion of the partners group is provides further impetus to the project aims. It is further evidence of the importance being placed on the need and ability to conduct high quality and effective post spill investigations and the cross government collective integration in the matter.
