Nanomaterial Survey- follow up in 2026.
29 June 2026
The Nanomaterial Survey was run by Cefas last year (between June and August 2025). Please see link to previous announcement here. This survey was conducted to help in identifying nanomaterials in offshore chemicals and eliminating gaps in flagging of substances deemed to meet the nanomaterial definition.
The survey was to inform States Supervision of Mines (SSM) in the Netherlands regarding the number of offshore chemicals containing nanomaterial substance, and broadly to support the OSPAR Offshore Industry Committee (OIC) in delivering the objectives of the North-East Atlantic Environment Strategy 2030.
The outcomes from collected data were summarised and presented at the OSPAR Offshore Industry Committee (OIC) meeting in March 2026 in Dublin.
Due to limited data which was received from industry and many open questions on which Cefas have not received a full response to survey suppliers will receive individual emails regarding missing data from nanomaterials survey. The email will be circulated to specific companies who have not responded to our questions back in 2025.
We request that the missing information is provided by the 1st of September 2026, latest, at the spreadsheet forward to suppliers on 10th -11th of June 2025.
If the data cannot be delivered at all by some companies or gaps in data are present for some substances from the form forward to suppliers, we require that justification “why” this information cannot be delivered is communicated to us via the email by the deadline mentioned above.
It needs to be highlighted that from 2021 the identification of deliberately added nanomaterials in offshore chemicals by the oil and gas industry is a mandatory task for each chemical company who wish to register their chemical products for use and discharge offshore under OSPARs Harmonised Mandatory Control System. Cefas are routinely requesting this information to be provided for both the UK and NL contracting parties at the chemical’s registration process as this data is required and reported separately by both contracting parties under OSPAR
Cefas thank chemical suppliers in advance for their cooperation and support in this matter.
