David Righton

Lead Scientist

David has over 25 years' research and commercial experience in temperate and tropical marine environments. He is an active researcher and publisher; with research interests encompassing fish behaviour and ecology, spatial dynamics and foraging strategy, and the management of fisheries/ human impacts. He works on a wide range of study species, ranging from Atlantic cod to European eel and Atlantic bluefin tuna. His science and advisory role is underpinned by a strong background in project management and delivery of complex interdisciplinary and multi-partner/ country projects for UK Government and the EU, and in consequence he leads on Cefas-wide science and research planning activity. David is a former associate editor of the Journal of Marine Biology and is currently the chair of the Buckland Foundation.

In 2017, David became the Director of the newly established Cefas Strategy Directorate.
