Dr Fabio Campanella

Fisheries Biologist

Fabio is a fisheries scientist with over 10 years of experience in fisheries acoustics, fish ecology and species distribution modelling.

Fabio obtained his PhD in 2014 from the Università Politecnica delle Marche (Ancona – Italy) working on the spatial ecology of small pelagic fish in the Mediterranean Sea. Before joining Cefas in 2017 he worked as a postdoctoral fellow in the United States at the NOAA National Center for Coastal Ocean Science (Beaufort, NC) where he focused on the application of fisheries acoustics to investigate fish distribution over coral and rocky reefs.

His current research at Cefas involved the use of fisheries acoustics for the study of commercially exploited fish and other marine fauna in the UK waters, seamount fish ecology in the Southern Atlantic Ocean, use of acoustics on autonomous vehicles (e.g. gliders) and fish behaviour.

Fabio has attended more than 40 scientific cruises in the Mediterranean Sea, Atlantic and Pacific Ocean leading the acoustic sampling activities in many of them.

Research interests: His main research interests include the application of fisheries acoustics for the study of the distribution, ecology and behaviour of fish and other marine organisms. He is also interested in understanding how oceanographic conditions and environmental forcing affect the distribution of marine fauna.
