Pelagic Ecologist
James is a pelagic ecologist specialising in plankton ecology, marine monitoring and the emerging technologies to improve our understanding of marine ecosystems. His work focuses on integrating traditional and novel observing approaches, including plankton imaging (mainly the Plankton Imager (Pi-10), autonomous platforms, and environmental monitoring systems, to support ecosystem assessment and sustainable marine management. At Cefas, James leads and contributes to a range of research and operational monitoring programmes, with expertise in plankton observations and linking biological responses to environmental change. His current work includes developing real-time monitoring capabilities through the integration of plankton imaging and FerryBox observations used to support the detection of heatwaves in real time.
