Marcelo Gomes
Senior Fisheries Scientist
With more than 20 years’ experience in marine ecology and ecosystems, Marcelo has extensive work in Marine Ecology in UK and overseas, with special interest in Fish and Marine Ecology. He assesses and predicts the effects of natural or man-made drivers on marine populations from an ecosystem perspective for further application on subjects related to fishing, artificial reefs, wind energy, climate change and pollution for conservation, monitoring and advising purposes. He researches marine ecosystems’ functioning, innovative methods of coastal monitoring, biotic/abiotic coupling and fisheries ecology mostly using fish populations as models. Marcelo has lectured in modules involving Marine Biology and Ecology since 2001 in UK and overseas and supervised students and staff throughout. He has been reviewing manuscripts and funding applications for several international journals and funding bodies since 2011. Since joining Cefas in 2022, he has been working on projects related to Mixed Fisheries, Environmental Assessment and Natural Capital. He is currently the Team Leader for Fish Conservation Biology and member of the Working Group on Value of Coastal Habitats for Exploited Species, . Marcelo was educated at Universidade Estadual do Norte Fluminense (Brazil) and the University of Liverpool.
