Blue Futures- Cefas Careers Event
11 December 2025
The Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (Cefas) recently hosted two successful Blue Futures careers events, welcoming more than 150 sixth form students from across Weymouth, Lowestoft and surrounding areas to explore the diverse career opportunities available in aquatic science.
The events, held at Cefas facilities in Weymouth and Lowestoft, aimed to inspire the next generation of aquatic scientists by showcasing the breadth of roles within the sector. Building on the success of last year’s inaugural event, Blue Futures 2025 featured:
- Expert career talks from Cefas professionals sharing their personal journeys and career pathways
- Interactive science stands demonstrating cutting-edge aquatic research
- Behind-the-scenes laboratory tours offering insights into the work environment

Students heard from specialists including aquatic animal health experts, fish health inspectors, molecular biologists and communications professionals, gaining a realistic picture of the variety of careers supporting healthy oceans, rivers and marine ecosystems.
Professor Grant Stentiford, Chief Scientist at Cefas, said:
“Our ocean covers over 70% of the planet and is vital to life on Earth, yet aquatic science remains one of the least ethnically diverse sectors. At Cefas we are committed to breaking down barriers, promoting inclusivity and raising awareness of marine science careers. Through opportunities such as Blue Futures at both our Weymouth and Lowestoft sites, we’re working to change the narrative by showing young people from all backgrounds the exciting, meaningful careers available in this field.”
For students wishing to learn more about careers in aquatic science, Cefas has developed a comprehensive digital careers pack featuring videos, activities and information about 10 different aquatic science roles, available on the Cefas website HERE.
